USGI M81 Woodland Poncho Liner (Woobie)

First introduced during the Vietnam war as the lighter and faster drying alternative to the standard issue wool blanket, the USGI poncho liner quickly became a favourite amongst kit issued to troops.

Affectionately becoming known as the woobie.

Its design relatively unchanged since first being fielded, the woobie has a series of tie cords on the corners and sides which allow it to be attached to the grommets of a rain poncho. Despite being incredibly lightweight and packable the woobie still offers a reasonable amount of warmth, and can trap body heat even when soaking wet.

Not that you needed to worry about it getting wet anyway, these are very quick to dry.

These have a ridiculous amount of uses. You can use it as a poncho liner or It works very well with a bivvy as a lightweight sleeping bag or as a regular blanket when sleeping in hammocks etc. Whenever being warm and cozy is the goal, the woobie is the answer.

Did we mention these only weigh 590 grams? 

The woobie is such a popular item that many soldiers have gone to great lengths to keep theirs, even tailoring them into smoking jackets, hoodies and so on.

You can't truly understand why until you've owned one.
